English Dub Review: Kageki Shojo!!”A Glimpse of Stardom”

Overview

Long after the dramatic nature of the previous episode, The class is divided into groups of four and has two weeks to come up with a performance. Ai bucked her problem with reading kanji and escaped Andou’s thorough critique with little damage. But Sarasa is told that she won’t become a top star if she does not change…

Our Take

The girls finally got to act and as expected it didn’t go that well. Based on observation, it looks like the students want to get more of their practice lessons. I don’t find it surprising since a lot of them have high expectations for themselves. Their teacher Andou was definitely harsh in his words, but he was speaking facts. Sarasa will never be a top star unless she develops an acting style that sets herself apart without imitating others. She just had her 16th goddamn birthday, criticize much!?

Aside from the harsh criticism, at its core, the episode’s primarily about the importance of the basics when dealing with arts, and how people who start involving themselves try to rush into the action while not completely understanding such. Everything can be accomplished with steps, and if you don’t know how to properly take the necessary steps that make certain pieces of art come together, everything can easily fall apart when nobody learns from past mistakes.

Overall, another great episode but the dramatic cliffhanger felt forced in places. Andou has given these 4 girls some good advice, and that’s all for now of their capabilities based on critique. There’s a lot to take in. It makes sense for the drama and potential character progression with what he says to Sarasa, but it’s making the teachers look like drill sergeants. This is 100% something that could stem from my ignorance of art schools outside of what I’ve seen, but it is extremely recurrent to have teachers involved in art to be harsh in their critiques in media. Hopefully whatever Andou said to them will have a decent payoff later on…
