Airdrie manager Ian Murray has said that he was surprised to be able to sign a player of Kerr McInroy’s quality. McInroy played two Challenge Cup games for Celtic’s B Team but opted to make the move to play for Airdrie. This move will allow him to either earn himself an extension at Celtic or a suitor elsewhere. However, after impressing on his debut, Murray said that he would happily give McInroy a contract at The Penny Cars Stadium.
As reported by The Record, Murray said that the quality of McInroy was obvious and that he would aim to improve the player before sending him back to Celtic.
“I’m maybe a wee bit surprised that we’ve managed to get hold of Kerr; the longer the window goes on, sometimes things come up, and I’ve always said if we’re in a position to add to our squad with a player who is of genuine quality then we will always at least try.
“That was the case here; Kerr popped up in the last 48 hours, and we know how good he is.
“He’s been at Celtic since a young age, he’s still there at 21 and is training and playing with the first team, so he has definite quality.
“Just like any other player, we will aim to improve him as usual and then send him back to Celtic.
“If that changes at his end, then hopefully we’ll be in the mix to be in a position to try and entice him to us, because he’s a really good player.”
The 21-year-old, who plays as a defensive midfielder, central defender and left-back, will be hoping to showcase his talents in the SPFL League One. Having made 22 appearances for Dunfermline last season, it was expected that he would have made another loan move to the second tier but interest didn’t manifest into anything concrete, allowing Airdrie to move in.
McInroy said earlier this week that it probably would be his final year at Celtic as a future in the Hoops appears to be fading.
“It’s a confusing situation for me. My head has been all over the place trying to work things out. So for now, it’s just a case of getting games.
“I have an option of another year at Celtic but this will probably be my last year at Celtic. So I need to get as many games as I can, wherever that may be.”
It will be interesting to watch McInroy progress this season and whether the club look to offer him a new deal.
