Big news out of today’s Star Trek: Prodigy panel at New York Comic Con: Daveed Diggs, Jameela Jamil, Jason Alexander and Robert Beltran have joined the voice cast of season one in recurring roles. And not only that, we got our first good look at Hologram Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), thanks to a first-look clip from the series.

Depending on what you’re a fan of — Hamilton, The Good Place, Seinfeld, or, you know… Star Trek — these cast announcements probably vary in excitement level. For Star Trek fans, though, the big news is that the upcoming Paramount+ all-ages animated series will have yet another tie to the classic Star Trek: Voyager in Beltran, who played Chakotay for seven seasons on that series. On the show, Chakotay was First Officer of Voyager, but was promoted to Captain in the novels that followed the show — the rank he’ll hold on Prodigy.

What’s most intriguing about this is how Chakotay will pop up on Prodigy. The animated series, like Voyager, is set in the nearly impossible to reach Delta Quadrant (most of the Star Trek series are set in the Alpha Quadrant). Unless he somehow got lost again, it’s an open question how Chakotay might pop over to visit this fresh crew.

We know even less about the other new characters, though. Diggs will voice Commander Tysess, Jamil will voice Ensign Asencia, Alexander will voice Doctor Noum… And that’s pretty much all we know about them. Hopefully Commander Tysess will rap something about Starfleet history, but that seems like a stretch.

Also at the panel, we got a clip of Hologram Kathryn Janeway in action. Set on the brand new starship USS Protostar, the Janeway hologram will help train and assist the six young aliens who end up in possession of the vessel. In the clip, we see a captured Gwyn (Ella Purnell) and Dal (Brett Gray) jockey for command, while Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui) is mostly confused about what a “Federation” is. The show also stars John Noble and Jimmi Simpson as villains The Diviner and Drednok, as well as Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas and Dee Bradley Baker.

The one hour premiere, titled “Lost & Found,” will stream on Paramount+ on Thursday, October 28. In it, “a group of lawless teens, exiled on a mining colony outside Federation space, discover a derelict Starfleet ship. Dal must gather an unlikely crew for their newfound ship if they are going to escape Tars Lamora, but the Diviner and his daughter Gwyn have other plans.”

Watch the Hologram Janeway clip above, and speculate wildly about whether Doctor Noum will complain about “shrinkage.”
