With his contract set to finalize at the end of next season, Derek Carr has made it clear he’s in no rush to try and work on an extension.

While Las Vegas Raiders fans have been worried sick following Jon Gruden’s racist e-mail that was revealed, there’s something else for folks to keep in mind: Derek Carr’s future with the team. While Carr is under contract through next year, the stud signal-caller will be a free agent come 2023.

After signing his five-year, $125 million deal in 2017, Carr became the richest man in the NFL. What’s next for him? According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Carr won’t be ready to discuss a new extension until after the 2021 campaign wraps up.

For Carr, he’s been nothing short of outstanding this season and he’s in the MVP conversation. He leads the AFC with his 1,399 passing yards and he’s only second in the NFL behind Matthew Stafford and his 1,587 yards for the Los Angeles Rams.

Behind Carr’s strong play, the Raiders are 3-1. The team suffered its first loss of the year in Week 4 going up against Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite that result, Carr truly has been among the league’s best this year.

The fact that he doesn’t want to worry about his contract should be a bit concerning, though. Carr has said in the past that he’s hoping to be a Raider for life, which should calm some nerves. With that said, the longer the two sides wait to get something done, the more folks in Sin City are going to worry.

For now, Carr will look to end the season with a bang and put the Raiders in a position to compete for a Super Bowl. Once the campaign does end, the front office shouldn’t wait a minute in sitting down with Carr to see what’s next.
