HBO's adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction book Dune has been one of its most successful reworkings so far. Ahead of Dune's release this coming October on HBO Max, director Denis Villeneuve again addressed Dune 2 rumors.
The possibility of a sequel for Dune happening is yet to be confirmed. However, Villeneuve believes that Dune fans deserve to have a finished saga.
Denis Villeneuve Pushes For Dune 2 Production
Recently, Villeneuve graced Josh Horowitz's podcast Happy Sad Confuse where he shares his woes about Dune 2. He explained that Dune only portrays the first half of Frank Herbert's book.
He continued to discuss the ramifications of adapting Dune into a movie. The novel itself is very intricately written, which portrays an extensive alien way of life.
Villeneuve elucidated that having only one Dune film and cramming the book's entire plot in that film is impossible. He envisions Dune 2 happening.
As a long-time fan of the book, he feels like it is his job to finish the saga and give the fans the closure they need in Dune 2. Villeneuve said:
"It feels like a beginning [for] Dune Part 1 in a way that I did open the door into the universe and I was dreaming to explore [the books] since -- you are right -- 40 years. The main difficulty for me in directing Dune was to make sure that I try my best to bring some of the images that I saw that came to my mind when I read the book. I was a very ambitious kid when I read the book. So, I succeeded [in the movie] sometimes, other times not. I feel like luckily I succeeded. Some part of the creative is there. There's more to come in order to feel the journey's completed. In order to feel I've done it, I need more work. That's what I feel," Villeneuve shares.
Will Dune 2 Get The Green Light For Production?
It is hard to say whether Dune 2 will get the thumbs up from HBO or not. Sci-fi films such as Dune rely on box office earnings. With its limited theatrical release and its release on HBO's streaming app HBO Max, the decision to produce Dune 2 is still hanging in the balance.
From those who already watched Dune in theaters, there was only good to say about the film. It is possible that, because the movie got such rave observations, Dune 2 may happen after all.
Villeneuve is campaigning for Dune 2 to happen, and fans are backing him up on this.
