The Toyota Tundra has been an icon in the American pickup market for years, and the automaker is finally giving its full-size truck an overhaul. The 2022 Toyota Tundra will boast many new features, helping to make it more competitive with rivals. One of those features is a giant sunroof, and it could be a big selling point for customers.

Off the bat, one of the biggest changes to the Toyota Tundra happened under the hood. Gone are the V8 options, and now, Toyota offers only V6s. Not only that, but Toyota also offers a hybrid V6 option in the 2022 Tundra. The standard engine is a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. This provides about as much power as the best V8 option in the previous model year.

The hybrid engine, however, adds an electric motor and a small battery pack to that twin-turbo V6. This hybrid option harnesses 437 hp and 589 lb-ft of torque, significantly more power and torque than the V8s. As a result, the new Tundra has significantly better towing and payload capacity than before. Now, it can tow up to 12,000 pounds, a 17% increase, and it has a payload capacity of 1,940 pounds, an 11% boost.

Though the hybrid engine option is a big change for the Tundra, Toyota has made some big changes on the inside too. In fact, the truck now offers a gigantic sunroof.

The massive new sunroof on the 2022 Toyota Tundra

According to MotorTrend, one of the biggest upgrades comes in the Toyota Tundra’s optional moonroof. It went from a typical model to an all-glass panoramic roof. Toyota hasn’t released many details about the size of the new sunroof as of this writing, but it’s clearly larger than before. Now, it spans almost the entire roof.

In theory, this should allow passengers to look up and stargaze with ease. On top of that, it’s retractable as well. This should make it easy to open and let in plenty of fresh air.

But this isn’t the only change to the Tundra’s interior. MotorTrend says the rear glass window is now solid and retractable too. What this means for owners and their passengers is that, with the sunroof open and the rear window down, the Tundra can get even more fresh air than before. This might even allow the Tundra to achieve a nearly “open-topped feel.”

When is the 2022 Toyota Tundra coming out?

As of this writing, Toyota hasn’t revealed when the new Tundra will hit dealerships. The automaker hasn’t revealed the exact pricing of the new generation either. That said, the 2022 model will definitely arrive this year. So it’s only a matter of waiting for Toyota to reveal the details.

However, the new Tundra is just the latest in many upcoming Toyota models. Tundra fans have waited over a decade for Toyota to overhaul the truck, and it has finally happened. But elsewhere, they’ve been waiting a long time for a battery-electric vehicle.

Toyota has been a leader in hybrids since the Prius, and the new Tundra is more evidence of that. But the manufacturer has been slacking as far as EVs go. Well, that’s changing. The Toyota bZ4X is slated to arrive for the 2023 model year, and it’s set to be the first of many Toyota EVs.
