If the Las Vegas Raiders wish to sign Derek Carr to a contract extension, it won't occur until after the 2021 season. Carr has no plans to sign an extension with the Raiders during this year, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, with two years remaining on his current deal after the 2021 season.

Carr is owed $42 million over the final two years of a five-year deal he signed in 2017, which was worth $125 million. He's currently the 14th highest paid quarterback in the NFL, making his deal -- which was the highest for a quarterback in the NFL at the time -- a bargain based on his play.

Even though Carr is coming off a poor performance in Week 4, he still has completed 64.1% of his passes for 1,399 yards with eight touchdowns to just three interceptions (98.1 rating). He also leads the league in passing yards per game (349.8). The 30-year old Carr has thrown for 4,000 yards in each of the last three seasons, combining for 75 touchdowns to just 30 interceptions. His 13,605 passing yards since the start of the 2018 season is sixth most amongst NFL quarterbacks and his 98.5 passer rating is ninth for those quarterbacks with over 1,000 pass attempts in that span.

With the Raiders having more cap space after the season -- and the salary cap expected to increase -- Carr may be doing Vegas a favor by stalling extension talks now. A career year may get Carr more money, but the Raiders will also have enough cap space for the extra dollars that could be coming his way.
