Postgame review: Titans' Derrick Henry scores 3 TD, Jaguars' losing skid stretches to 20

Florida Times-Union

The Jacksonville Jaguars return to TIAA Bank Field Sunday to face off against their most frequent AFC South rivals, the Tennessee Titans. The game is the Jaguars' first since the controversy stemming from head coach Urban Meyer's bar video. No. 1 NFL Draft pick Trevor Lawrence is still searching for his first professional victory, while the Jaguars are aiming to prevent their losing streak from extending to 20 games, which would be third-worst in NFL history. In order to do that, Jacksonville must contain the Tennessee offense and running back Derrick Henry, the NFL rushing champion and Heisman Trophy winner who shattered the national career record at Yulee High School.

|  Gene Frenette: Meet Team Almost, the franchise that just can't win

It’s hard to know where to start trying to explain why Team Almost is so maddening to watch. Some will insist it’s just in the Jaguars’ DNA, that this infuriating franchise has now lost 20 consecutive games – the most in NFL history by a non-expansion team -- because of a predisposition for failure.     |  Read more --Gene Frenette

FINAL: Titans 37, Jaguars 19

That's it. Kevin Byard picks off Trevor Lawrence as the clock expires and the losing skid hits 20.

4:00 p.m. |  Touchdown Titans: Derrick Henry scores again

That's touchdown No. 3 on the day for Yulee's Derrick Henry. Straight up the middle from 10 yards. It's getting worse for the Jaguars. Loss No. 20 is staring them in the face.

Titans 37, Jaguars 19, 1:54 4th.

3:55 p.m. |  Jaguars denied on fourth down

That should do it. Trevor Lawrence throws incomplete on fourth down with four and a half minutes to go. Up 12 points, the Titans can now drain the clock with Derrick Henry.

3:40 p.m. |  Jaguars' Carlos Hyde stuffed on the 1

Yikes. A lot to process on that drive.

First came the highlight, a 58-yard pass from Trevor Lawrence to Laviska Shenault. The receiver, who hadn't caught any passes up to that point, took a short throw deep into Tennessee territory.

Then, Lawrence got picked off in the end zone, only to get bailed out by a Titans penalty and an automatic first down.

Lawrence then ran into the end zone from 3 yards for an apparent touchdown, but after a replay review, officials spotted the ball inside the 1...

...and on fourth-and-goal, Urban Meyer called for the handoff to Carlos Hyde — not James Robinson, who has 143 yards — and the Titans stuffed Hyde for a loss.

3:20 p.m. |  Touchdown Jaguars! Trevor Lawrence runs it in

They're not quite finished yet. After a drive where Trevor Lawrence used both his arm and his legs, absorbing a couple of tough hits in the process, the rookie quarterback found the end zone on a draw from 4 yards out.

Urban Meyer went for two, but Lawrence's conversion went out of the end zone. But there's still some hope.

Titans 31, Jaguars 19, 13:50 4th.

3:15 p.m. | END OF THIRD QUARTER: Tennessee 31, Jacksonville 13

It's now 15 minutes away from 20 losses in a row for the Jaguars, despite a superb game from James Robinson (142 yards through three quarters).

3:08 p.m. |  Sacksonville returns (for now)

Dawuane Smoot comes through with a sack on Ryan Tannehill to drive Tennessee out of field goal range late in Q3. But the Jaguars are going to need a lot more notable plays to get back into this one.

2:54 p.m. |  Touchdown Titans: Derrick Henry scores his second

Now, the Jaguars have to deal with Derrick Henry in Second Half Mode. Look out.

After that unsuccessful challenge from Urban Meyer, Tennessee kept the football moving, and capped the drive with a Henry cannonball charge right up the middle from 8 yards out.

Titans 31, Jaguars 13, 9:48 3rd.

2:50 p.m. | Urban Meyer's challenge fails... Titans keep the ball

Incompletion... or fumble?

The Jags are still searching for a break. K'Lavon Chaisson rounded the Titans line and hammered Ryan Tannehill from behind, jarring the football some 15 yards downfield and into the hands of Dakota Allen. The Jacksonville linebacker returned the loose ball to near midfield. Then things got wacky. Officials initially ruled the play a fumble, then after a huddle, they changed the call to an incomplete pass. But Urban Meyer hurled his red challenge flag, and upon further review... the incompletion stands.

2:38 p.m. | Air games heating up for Jaguars, Titans QBs

Southwest Airlines flights around the country are having troubles today, but no such issues for Trevor Lawrence and Ryan Tannehill at TIAA Bank Field. The two quarterbacks have combined for 263 passing yards, 71 percent completion and no turnovers at the break.

The Titans receive the second-half kickoff.

 2:25 p.m. | HALFTIME: Titans 24, Jaguars 13

It's looking like the Jaguars are getting close to their 20th consecutive loss.

They've held Derrick Henry in check (31 yards, including the touchdown), but Tennessee's Ryan Tannehill has picked the secondary apart. The Jaguars trail by two scores despite a strong first half from Trevor Lawrence (11 for 14, 114 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions) and a 110-yard half from James Robinson.

2:18 p.m. | Field goal Titans: Randy Bullock adds to lead

It's getting worse for the Jaguars. The Titans' drive drops short of the end zone, but Randy Bullock still delivers a 34-yard field goal. That comes after the Jaguars' missed field goal on the previous drive.

Titans 24, Jaguars 13, 0:31 2nd.

2:12 p.m. |  TWO MINUTE WARNING

The Jaguars have now missed one (1) extra point and one (1) field goal, after Matthew Wright's 53-yard attempt clanked off the crossbar and short.

2:00 p.m. |  Touchdown Titans: Ryan Tannehill picking defense apart

Not much resistance from the Jacksonville defense on that possession. Ryan Tannheill led the Tennessee offense upfield quickly, including a pair of designed runs for wide receivers, and finished with a 15-yard TD strike to a wide-open MyCole Pruitt. It's looking like a shootout at TIAA Bank Field.

Titans 21, Jaguars 13, 5:49 2nd.

1:50 p.m. |  Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence scores on fourth down

It's a good start for Trevor Lawrence. The rookie quarterback led the Jaguars up the field, with some help from James Robinson's rushes, and came through on fourth-and-goal. He found tight end Jacob Hollister for a 1-yard score, and after Matthew Wright's extra point (good this time), the deficit is down to one point.

Titans 14, Jaguars 13, 9:55 2nd.

1:42 p.m. |  Touchdown Titans: Derrick Henry scores again

Never a surprise when Derrick Henry comes back to Jacksonville and scores. The former Yulee High School star powers into the end zone from 1 yard out to extend the Tennessee lead.

The Titans kept that drive alive after a heavily-booed pass interference flag on Jaguars corner Chris Claybrooks, plus a pass from Ryan Tannehill to A.J. Brown.

Titans 14, Jaguars 6, 14:56 2nd.

1:40 p.m. |  END OF FIRST QUARTER: Tennessee 7, Jacksonville 6

That's the end of the first quarter. But the Titans are driving again, knocking on the door at the Jacksonville 1.

1:33 p.m. |  Nice start for Jaguars defense

It's still 7-6 Titans for now, but the Jacksonville defense is delivering a strong early showing. They're generating pressure on Ryan Tannehill and almost got a pick from Shaquill Griffin on second down. Tennessee only has 32 yards so far.

1:13 p.m. |  Touchdown Jaguars: James Robinson responds

That's how you bounce back from a defensive touchdown. James Robinson goes to work for the Jaguars, starting with a 58-yard zoom down the left sideline that only ended when Kevin Byard brought him down from behind in the red zone. From there, the second-year running back found the end zone from 1 yard.

Then, an oops: Matthew Wright pinged the extra point off the goalpost. That's the second kicker to miss a PAT for the Jaguars this year.

Tennessee 7, Jacksonville 6, 11:21 1st.

1:05 p.m. |  Touchdown Titans: Scoop-and-score on third play

That's not going to be great for Urban Meyer's composure. The Jaguars' coach is visibly furious on the sidelines.

On the Jaguars' third play from scrimmage, Trevor Lawrence fired a completion to Dan Arnold. But the tight end got stripped of the ball, and Titans safety Kevin Byard took the loose ball back 30 yards to the end zone.

Titans 7, Jaguars 0, 14:00 1st.

 1 p.m. |  It's kickoff time!

10:45 a.m. | After turbulent week, Jaguars coach Urban Meyer ready to lead his team against Titans

It would have been quite enough for the Jaguars if the focus this week had been confined to their defensive inability to stop the big-play and they remain one of only two teams in the NFL yet to win a game. The Jaguars, however, went through a firestorm controversy this week that focused entirely on their head coach — Urban Meyer.  |  Read more --John Reid
