Sunday is World Mental Health Day
Since 1992, October 10 has been designated as World Mental Health day by the World Health Organization as a chance for people to reflect on how they're feeling. A Fort Smith mental health professional said the best way people can observe the day is to find someone they can talk to, like a therapist, counselor or other mental health professional."Sometimes we think about mental health and mental wellness more of like everything’s fine until it isn’t," said Sarah Gibbons, a licensed professional counselor with Fort Smith Clinic. "In our world, we think about mental wellness as akin to a check up from your PCP, but mental wellness should be something we’re always thinking about. How am I taking care of not just my physical health, but my mental and emotional health and my stress level and all the things that go into it?"The Guidance Center in Fort Smith offers counseling and social work services, as well as a non-crisis line that is staffed by licensed therapists. You can call them at 479-452-6655 or call the emergency hotline at 1-800-542-1031.“When you find yourself not doing the things you used to do, it’s time for a self check,” said Gibbons. “It’s never too early, and it’s never too late to get help. If you find yourself struggling reach out. If you know someone is struggling , we can help you figure out how to help them.”The Sebastian County Crisis Stabilization Unit is also a resources for those struggling with a mental health crisis.
