Southampton forward Nathan Redmond has confirmed that he has been in contact with Jamaica about a potential switch of national allegiance.

The 27-year-old has one cap for England after appearing in an international friendly against Germany back in 2017 but will be eligible to play for Jamaica should he choose to after not playing a competitive fixture for the Three Lions.

Speaking to the Daily Echo recently, Redmond said:

"“They’ve made contact but at the moment I’ve got some things going on, I’m expecting my first child in a couple of months so on my priority list it’s not top, top there at the moment.”"

Southampton man could fall back in love with football eventually

It has certainly been a tough couple of years for Redmond at Southampton after a significant struggle to regain the form that saw him named the club’s Player of the Season back in 2018/19.

A lack of goals and assists has been seen from the winger but has not been exclusive to him as a number of attacking players try to the fill the void left by previous player departures.

Perhaps what is to come for Redmond will help him to contribute more as he goes through what should be the peak years of his career.

The birth of his first child will undoubtedly be a boost to him and his family and is perhaps a reminder that there is a lot more for footballers to be occupied with away from the game they play.

Potentially playing for Jamaica will have some pros and cons but could perhaps be a catalyst for something to change in his fortunes for Southampton. He would join up with a host of players based in England who have already been called up to the Reggae Boyz’s squad in recent years.

Jamaica are currently in 2022 World Cup qualifiers but sit bottom of their CONCACAF group behind other countries from the North America region.
