Volleyball Dominates Visiting Panthers

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team concluded its weekend by hosting SSC opponent Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon at Rubin Arena.

The Sailfish continued their winning ways, earning their third victory in a row by sweeping the Panthers, 3-0. PBA (8-8, 4-4 SSC) extended its win streak in the DII-era series against Florida Tech (2-15, 2-7 SSC) to 19 games, dating back to 2011, including a perfect 11-0 at home. The 'Fish dominated most of the match, taking two of the three sets by 10 points each.

The tandem of Jazz Schmidt and Alyse Cundiff led PBA with 12 kills each. Schmidt, the reigning SSC Offensive Player of the Week, stuffed her stat line with 18 assists, seven digs, and two aces while hitting .524. Cundiff hit a scorching, .667 with seven digs. Alyssa Avitia totaled a team-high 20 assists. Ally Smith led PBA with 16 digs and a pair of aces. Amber Rowoldt followed with seven digs and six kills, hitting .308. Mary Morgan Formby tallied five kills and two blocks, hitting .375.

PBA found its rhythm midway through the first set. With the 'Fish leading 15-12, PBA went on an 8-1 run with kills from Rowoldt, Maddy Hooper, and Schmidt while taking advantage of several FT errors. Schmidt closed out the set with a kill to secure a 25-15 set win. The Sailfish hit a match-high .552 in the set with just two attacking errors.

The Sailfish broke away early in the second set, starting on a 15-3 run, including four kills from Cundiff, a pair of kills from Schmidt and Anna Gregerson, along with kills from Rowoldt and Avitia. The Panthers attempted to chip away at the Sailfish lead but to no avail. PBA showed off its depth towards the tail end of the set with kills from Grace Talbert and Caroline Henderson ending a 25-16 set win.

FT tried to flip the script in the third set, starting with an 8-4 run. The Sailfish kicked the offense back into gear with a 7-0 run with three blocks from the front line of Rowoldt, Ryleigh Blough, and Formby to take an 11-8 lead. Minutes later, a 6-2 run, with kills by Blough, Schmidt, and Cundiff, extended the PBA lead to 18-13 which gave the 'Fish plenty of breathing room. The Sailfish ended the set on another 7-1 run with a kill by Marlena Kincaid closing out the 25-15 set win and a 3-0 sweep of the Panthers.

The Sailfish hit a season-best .411 in the match, which was their highest hitting percentage in a match since the 2017 season. PBA held Florida Tech to a .124 hitting percentage with seven blocks and 45 total digs. PBA finished the match with a 77 percent side-out percentage.

PBA hits the road for three straight road games this coming week. Their next match takes place on Oct. 12 against Lynn. The match in Boca Raton, Fla. starts at 7 p.m.
