Men’s XC Places Third, Women Take Fifth at New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – The Brown men's and women's cross country teams each received strong performances to power their way to top five finishes at the New England XC Championships in Boston on Saturday. The men finished in third place overall out of 24 teams, while the women came in fifth out of 23.

For the men, it is their highest placement at the New England Championships since finishing runner-up in 2016. The women's fifth place showing was their highest placement at the meet since winning the NE title back in 2009.

"We were very happy with how both teams executed the race plan today," said distance coach Hannah Chappell-Dick. "Our team ran the first half of the race as a tight pack, with a goal of working together and staying controlled. Together, they worked their way through the field and had their strongest finishes yet. Pack running with teammates isn't only more effective for performance, it's also more fun."

Senior Griffin McCauley (24:57.4) and freshman Miles Mullins (24:58.9) led the charge for the men in the eight kilometer race, placing fifth and sixth overall, respectively out of 161 runners. Sophomore Evan Sherman followed in 19th place overall, with Ben McCoy (25th/25:22.8), Jared Yabu (34th/25:39.3) and Gabe Cannavo (43rd/25:50.1) scoring points in the team's top five.

"Griffin and Miles worked together every step of the way to finish in under 25 minutes," Chappell-Dick said. "Ben McCoy ran one of his strongest races ever in his first 8K of the season."

On the women's side, senior Katherine Dokholyan paced the Brown pack in the 5K with a 19th place finish out of 155 runners with a time of 18:15.3. Sophomore Tevah Gevelber followed in 26th in 18:27.0. Next up, sophomore Isa Stronski crossed the line in 35th with a time of 18:39.1. She was followed by Katie Orchard (39th/18:42.7) and Mary Bibbey (46th/18:51.7) to round out Brown's scoring five.

"Isa had a huge breakthrough to finish third for the team and ran half a minute faster than last week in just her third college race."

The Bears next meet will come on the Brown campus when they host the Rothenberg Run on Friday, Oct. 22.
