There were a lot of NBA trade rumors swirling around Miami Heat shooting guard Tyler Herro this offseason.

Some were under the impression that the Heat would try moving their second-year guard in a trade this offseason, with high odds being placed on a deal getting done.

According to Ethan Skolnick of Five Reasons Sports, there was at least a 75 percent chance that Herro was going to be traded this offseason. Some outlets believed that was on the low end, so it seemed almost as a foregone conclusion that he would be traded.

Part of the reason for the souring on Herro was that he didn’t take that second-year leap many expected.

Tyler Herro played so well in the Orlando Bubble, helping get the Heat to the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Unfortunately, he was unable to consistently replicate that production during the 2020-21 season.

Herro, like many of his teammates, did very little in the first-round playoff series against the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks swept the Heat in four games and Herro averaged only 9.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. He made only 31.6 percent of his overall shots and 3-pointers in the series.

Herro was a player that the Heat was adamant about keeping when trade talks took place with other teams. It was a decision that didn’t hurt them when it came to Kyle Lowry, as he was acquired this offseason via sign-and-trade from the Toronto Raptors. But, it could have been costly.

Miami is banking on Herro returning to form, and one NBA scout that spoke to Evan Massey of NBA Analysis Network believes the former Kentucky product is in for a big season.

“The Heat are going to be good this season, but a lot of eyes will be on Tyler Herro. Can he take a big leap in year three? If he doesn’t, could Miami seriously look to trade him? Well, I think he’s in line for a big jump this season and will make moving him a nearly impossible situation.”

Tyler Herro is an integral part of the Miami Heat’s plan and if they want to succeed, they will need him to play well. If they can get the Herro from the Orlando Bubble during his rookie season, Miami will be very difficult to beat.
