Lincoln Riley and his Oklahoma Sooners remain undefeated after taking down the Texas Longhorns, 55-48, during the latest edition of the Red River Rivalry on Saturday in spectacular fashion. But it’s not just the comeback victory that has the entire Norman buzzing, but also the huge decision by Riley to bench quarterback Spencer Riley for backup Caleb Williams.

Following the Sooners’ improbably come-from-behind win, Riley spoke about his move to put the preseason Heisman Trophy favorite on the bench in favor of Williams. Via TJ Eckert:

“Really had a lot to do with turnovers.” Says Rattler deserves a ton of credit for coming in on the most important play of the game (2 point conversion.)

Riley had an ugly first half and his poor play was largely to blame for why the Sooners trailed Texas at the half by 18 points. He threw an interception in the first quarter and was stripped off the ball just before the end of the second quarter, an error Texas would make the Sooners pay for, as the Longhorns scored three plays later.

The Sooners started to right the ship in the second half with Williams taking over the quarterbacking duties for the team. He finished the game with 212 passing yards and a couple of touchdowns on 16-of-25 completions, and also rushed for 88 yards and a score on just four carries.

Now we wait whether Riley will stick with Rattler as the Sooners’ starter in their next game against the TCU Horned Frogs at home, or will go with the hot hand in Williams.
