It is true that Mank didn’t meet the unanimous acclaim David Fincher has grown accustomed to throughout his career, but it is possible that this will be forgotten with his upcoming project. After all, the filmmaker is a true master of thriller, and The Killer marks his return to the genre, from a script by no less than Andrew Kevin Walker, who wrote Se7en and has made several uncredited contributions to Fincher’s scripts over the past years.
An adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s graphic novel, The Killer stars Michael Fassbender, and The Playlist has just announced a most promising addition to the cast.
Thus, Tilda Swinton will join Fassbender in a role of some importance, whose casting has contributed to a delay in filming. The plan was for Fincher to officially launch The Killer this November, but a statement by Swinton suggests that the date has been pushed back to 2022.
“Well, yes, I think I am, yes. But that’s next year. That’s a whole other story!,” Swinton briefly explained while promoting Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s critically acclaimed new film, Memoria. Possibly this delay is due to scheduling conflicts, since Swinton is currently shooting the new Wes Anderson film, who has chosen Madrid as the setting.
There are no details as to what character Swinton will play, although from Nolent’s original we can guess that The Killer will revolve around the misadventures of a hitman whose work ends up subjecting him to a mental breakdown and loses track of reality. Aside from that, the film is part of the exclusive contract that Fincher signed with Netflix shortly after Mank was released, consolidating a juicy partnership with the streaming giant that dates back to previous years, when the prestigious filmmaker became involved in both House of Cards and Mindhunter.
For now, The Killer doesn’t have a release date.
