Giorgos Giakoumakis arrived at Celtic on transfer deadline day with a lot of expectations behind him. He was coming off of a spectacular 2020/21 campaign which had seen him finish as the Eredivisie’s top scorer and by some distance. Thus, it is understandable that there was quite some excitement surrounding the signing.

But at the same time, there was quite some worry as well. Giakoumakis’ goalscoring record before the previous campaign was not good. In fact, the 26-year-old striker scored more than half of his career goals last season.

Thus, it would have always been interesting to see how he would do in a Celtic shirt. But unfortunately, we have not got to see much of him at all till now.

Giakoumakis has struggled to get up to match speed since arriving at Parkhead and has appeared only once. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has only played 16 minutes of football for the Hoops till now.

Celtic have a massive Giakoumakis problem on their hands

Recently, Kyogo spent quite some time on the sidelines due to injury. That would have been the perfect opportunity for Giakoumakis to get a good run in the first-team and find his feet at Celtic.

But, he was not match fit during that period of time either. Now, Kyogo is back in action and is once again making a difference for the club. Thus, it is hard to see Giakoumakis starting ahead of the Japanese star anytime soon.

On the other hand, both Jota and Liel Abada have established themselves as important members of Ange Postecoglou’s side already. As a result, it is expected that the duo could partner Kyogo in a front three moving forward.

So, not only are there questions about how Giakoumakis will fit into this side but also about when he will get significant minutes on the pitch to prove himself and adjust to this new team.

Even if he does not end up establishing himself as a regular in the first-team, Celtic do need some quality cover for Kyogo. Thus, one can only hope that Giakoumakis can find both form and fitness soon. Otherwise, the Hoops could be in for a long season.
