Daniel Galeas, 3, was found unconscious in the back area of the 40-unit building in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, WNBC reported. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police told WPIX.

Police said the bed was next to the window and Galeas fell out. He was found in a stairwell that leads to a basement, according to WNBC.

Galeas would have turned 4 on Monday, the television station reported.

The child lived a few blocks away in a different apartment building but was staying with his aunt and other children when he fell, the boy’s grandmother told the television station. The boy’s mother was at work at the time of the incident.

Police said Galeas tripped and fell through a space in the window between an air conditioning unit and the wall, WPIX reported.

Authorities are looking at how the air conditioning unit was installed, the television station reported. Police said it was too small for the window and cardboard was used to fill the gap.

Family members told WNBC that the building’s management was to blame for improperly securing the unit to the apartment window. Apartment officials told the television station that the family installed the unit on their own.

By New York City law, all air conditioning units must be safely and permanently installed, according to WPIX. Apartments with children ages 10 and under are required to have window guards installed, the television station reported.
