U.S. APPEALS COURT ALLOWS TEXAS ABORTION LAW TO CONTINUE

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has allowed Texas to temporarily continue enforcing its ban on most abortions.

On Friday, the court suspended a ruling from a federal judge issued two days prior, which blocked the state from enforcing the new law.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman came after a lawsuit filed against the state by the U.S. Department of Justice.  Texas immediately sought to reverse Pitman’s order, with Texas attorneys saying on Friday that it “violates the separation of powers at every turn.”

The new abortion law prohibits abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, which is usually around the six-week mark of pregnancy.

The Department of Justice has until Tuesday to respond to the ruling.
