Men's Water Polo Set for NYC Doubleheader

Buff & Blue to face Fordham & Wagner

GW men's water polo makes the trip to New York City on Saturday for a split Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference doubleheader vs. Fordham and Wagner.

The Buff and Blue will face the 17th-ranked Rams in an 11 a.m. start at Messmore Aquatic Center in the Bronx before heading over to Staten Island to face the Seahawks in a 5 p.m. tilt at Spiro Sports Center.

LAST TIME OUT: GW went 1-2 on its trip to California with a win over Westcliff and setbacks vs. a pair of ranked foes in Cal Baptist and Loyola Marymount.

Andrija Sekulic and Nick Schroeder tied for the team lead with five goals over the three games.

DYNAMITE DEFENSE: Luca Castorina is having a fantastic sophomore season in net, making 177 saves against 166 goals allowed through 14 games for a .516 save percentage. The Catania, Sicily, native has also piled up 28 steals and nine assists on the season.

Castorina has twice been named MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week, including on Sept. 28 after the team's 3-0 weekend to open conference play. He continued to play well on the California trip, highlighted by a 19-save effort in the 15-7 victory over Westcliff.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Fordham and GW are tied atop the MAWPC standings in the early going at 3-0. The Rams (14-4 overall) were also in California last week and picked up five wins in six games. Lucas Nieto Jasny was honored as MAWPC Player of the Week after recording 26 points (15 goals, 11 assists) for the week.

Wagner went 2-2 out West with both losses to ranked foes. The Seahawks are 8-11 overall and 1-3 in conference action. Goalkeeper Ethan Zirh was named MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week after totaling 30 saves across the four contests last week.

UP NEXT: GW is back at Smith Center Pool next Saturday, Oct. 16, hosting Bucknell at 2 p.m.
