God is the highest meaning of the word 'great'

I don’t know how you feel about this, but I am tired of hearing “Have a great day” as the closing remark on a recorded telephone message or from the checkout line employee.

I am not opposed to its use, but this common — often quick expression — comes across to me so many times as “mechanical” without much thought.

We might ask if we can be more original and refreshing with variety behind our thoughts, such as “We hope you will have a pleasant day” or “Good wishes for an enjoyable day.”

I believe “great” can be considered with a higher significance. And the highest meaning is God.

God is great: “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names” (Psalms 147:4). And, yet He knows each of us: “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” (Psalms 8:4). What wonderful expressions of God’s all-inclusive love and care!

God’s relationship to His creation is exemplified through the accomplishments of Christ Jesus. He said of God’s greatness, “… All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18).

Christ Jesus also said, “… with God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27).

So may we think of God whenever we consider the highest meaning of “great.”

I hope you will have a satisfying day.
