SAN FRANCISCO — The Dodgers were victimized by a Webb gem.

Buster Posey hit a 3-and-0 fastball from Walker Buehler into McCovey Cove for a two-run home run in the first inning and the Dodgers never responded, managing just five hits in eight innings against Giants starter Logan Webb and losing Game 1 of the NL Division Series, 4-0, Friday night at Oracle Park.

The Dodgers spent the summer trying to catch up to the San Francisco Giants. The weather has changed. That pursuit hasn’t. The best-of-five series continues Saturday night at 6 p.m.

“I just think, to be quite honest, we didn’t make adjustments,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of his hitters. “I thought he had good command tonight, mostly to the glove side versus right-handed hitters. Then the slider, the changeup down below and we just chased a lot more than we have.

“If you don’t make adjustments, then they’re going to keep going to the well and that was kind of the story of it.”

The Dodgers were counting on Buehler’s history of postseason excellence to give them a leg up in the series. But he was outpitched by the Giants’ 24-year-old emerging ace making his first postseason start.

“Logan was the star of the day, night,” Giants outfielder Kris Bryant said. “I’m so impressed with him. His first playoff experience and he was out there playing like it was a game in his backyard.”

Webb befuddled the Dodgers’ hitters with a late-breaking slider and changeup. Like Bon Jovi, he did all of his best work in the 80s. In 92 pitches Friday, he threw just 25 fastballs, 20 of those sinkers. The rest were sliders (29) and changeups (38). The Dodgers swung at 36 of those pitches – and missed 19 times. Webb struck out 10 Dodgers and induced weak contact, producing 11 ground-ball outs. Six of those ground outs left the Dodgers bats at less than 75 mph.

“Last year, we lived by the homer in the regular season, but I thought in the postseason we brought out a different club and we got deep into counts, took walks and used the whole field, kept the line moving and you’re going to run into some homers that way,” Roberts said, mixing in a golf metaphor. “I think tonight … we just didn’t make an adjustment all night long.

“I thought we had the same club all night long and that was the driver.”

Webb certainly put his best foot forward. That’s how he squelched the Dodgers’ best – only? – scoring opportunity.

They got Corey Seager to third base with two outs in the first inning and Justin Turner hit a hard ground ball back up the middle. Webb kicked out his foot, deflected the ball and collected it to throw out Turner at first.

The play of the night was turned in by the Giants’ infield behind Webb, though.

Seager reached base to start the fourth inning and Justin Turner again hit a ground ball up the middle. This time, it skipped through the mound and past second base, where Giants second baseman Tommy La Stella back-handed it and flipped it from his glove to shortstop Brandon Crawford who reached above his head to glove it, stepped on the base and fired to first base to complete the double play.

“That was pretty sick,” Webb said of the web gem. “That was awesome. I was screaming and yelling. I think everyone was screaming and yelling. It was a special play.”

“Definitely a SportsCenter Top 10 play,” Bryant said.

The Dodgers did very little to pressure Webb outside of that or knock him from his obvious off-speed gameplan. Webb threw 12 or fewer pitches to retire the side in six of his first seven innings.

“He had good command on his slider, command of his changeup and his sinker was pretty good tonight,” said Will Smith, who had two of the Dodgers’ five hits. “It kept us off-balance. He threw a lot of off-speed pitches and just made his pitches.”

Only four pitchers in postseason history have struck out 10 without walking a batter in their postseason debut – Jake Arrieta (2015), Don Newcombe (1949), Deacon Phillippe (1903) and Webb. Of that group, only Webb and Arrieta did it while also holding their opponent scoreless.

Buehler, meanwhile, was the victim of an ambush.

After walking La Stella on five pitches to start the first inning, Buehler retired the next two but fell behind 3-and-0 to Posey.

Buehler hadn’t given up a home run on a three-ball count since 2018. He had never given up a home run on a 3-and-0 count as a big-league pitcher.

Posey crushed his 3-and-0 fastball, bouncing it off the smokestacks behind the right-field seats and into McCovey Cove for a two-run home run. It was the first postseason home run for the veteran catcher – who sat out the 2020 pandemic season – since the 2012 World Series when he took Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer deep in Game 4.

“Buster’s been in this game a long time. I think they obviously trust him to swing 3-and-0,” Buehler said, calling the fastball “a mistake heater.”

Buehler cruised from there until Bryant led off the seventh inning with a home run. It was the first time in 12 postseason starts Buehler gave up two home runs and the first time since the second of those starts (against the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2018 NLCS) that he allowed more than two runs.

“It’s on me to try and create some momentum and I kind of sucked that out of our dugout,” Buehler said.

The National League’s leading home run-hitting team during the regular season, the Giants added a third when Crawford took Alex Vesia deep in the eighth inning.
