Cincinnati Round-Up: Week 8 of high school football
It was another great night of action on the high school gridiron across Cincinnati as many key conference matchups took place. With the playoffs starting in just a few weeks the cream is starting to rise to the top.
NO. 1 ST. XAVIER 49, NO. 7 LA SALLE 14
The Bombers bounced back after their first loss of the season in grand fashion as they won the 62nd King of the Road matchup versus the Lancers by five touchdowns. St. Xavier now leads the series all-time 41-17-4.
The contest went to a running clock in the third quarter, marking the seventh time St. Xavier has managed that feat over their last nine games dating back to last season. This game was never in doubt from the beginning.
St. Xavier outgained La Salle 524 to 86 in total yards and held a 10.5-minute advantage in time of possession. Senior running back Charles Kellom rushed for four scores and 108 yards on 23 carries. Classmate Brogan McCaughey netted 333 yards and three TDs through the air on 15-of-19 passing.
NO. 15 FAIRFIELD 27, NO. 13 MASON 22
Fairfield pulled to .500 in GMC play with a big win over Mason. The Indians put up 478 yards of total offense, including 226 on the ground to seal the victory. After a slow start, Jason Krause’s team has now won three of their last five contests.
Talon Fisher starred in this one, rushing for 81 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries and throwing for 252 yards and another score through the air. Christian Jackson led all receivers with seven catches for 105 yards and a TD. The Indians defense put pressure on Mason all night, coming away with four sacks.
Comets' quarterback Larson Brown finished the night with 210 yards and two touchdowns on 12-of-22 passing.
NO. 18 ANDERSON 35, NO. 25 MILFORD 7
The Raptors put up one of their most balanced offensive attacks of the season and picked up another key ECC win in the process, knocking off the Eagles on the road.
Evan Upchurch carried the ball 24 times for 120 yards and a TD. Quarterback Griffin Scalf added 99 more yards rushing and a score and threw for 239 yards, including TD passes to Connor Casey and Brody Foley. Joey Faulkner led all receivers with 14 receptions for 140 yards and also rushed for a TD.
The big story on the night was the Anderson defense, who after a rough start to the season the unit has now ceded just 35 points over the last three weeks.
