AEW Rampage Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from October 8

The Doctor Chris Mueller

Friday's episode of Rampage packed a lot on to the card for the one-hour show featuring four matches, two of which were for titles.

Ricky Starks made a rare defense of the FTW Championship in a Philadelphia Street Fight against former champion Brian Cage.

The other title bout featured Penta El Zero M and Rey Fenix putting the AEW World Tag Team Championships on the line against Anthony Bowens and Max Caster.

We also saw CM Punk battle Daniel Garcia and Jade Cargill taking on Skye Blue. Let's take a look at everything that happened on Friday's show.

CM Punk vs. Daniel Garcia

Mark Henry did a backstage interview with Punk, Garcia and 2.0. Punk compared 2.0 to the little brothers of The Nasty Boys before we went into the arena for their entrances.

The Straight Edge Superstar overpowered Garcia during a test of strength and put him in a straitjacket submission. He hit a shoulder tackle that sent Garcia to the corner to regroup.

Punk applied a heel hook, but Garcia got to the ropes to force a break. The newcomer to AEW hit a chest chop, but Punk no-sold it and slapped him in the face.

Once Garcia took control, he focused his offense on Punk's legs. Punk kept trying to make a comeback, but Garcia kept taking him out at the knee.

The Second City Savior won a battle of strikes and started to build some momentum as he got the feeling back in his leg. Garcia countered the GTS and locked in a Sharpshooter. Punk was able to escape before he took out Garcia and 2.0 with a dive from the top turnbuckle.

Punk brought him back in and hit a couple more moves before locking in the Anaconda Vice for the win.

Grade: B+

Analysis

The pre-match split-screen interviews are a quick and effective way to hype a match. Henry has gotten more comfortable in his role as an interviewer, too.

They were able to tell a coherent story in this bout. Punk was the veteran who wanted to show these young guns he could still hang, while Garcia wanted to prove he was better than the veteran.

Punk did a good job selling Garcia's offense. He did it enough to make the young superstar look good, but Punk still managed to get the win. This was a fun opening bout that allowed Punk to show off some of his technical skills against one of the best new workers in AEW.

The Lucha Bros vs. The Acclaimed (AEW Tag Titles)

The tag title match started before the bell when Bowens and Caster attacked Fenix and Penta to get an unfair advantage.

Once they got in the ring and the ref called for the bell, the champs took control with some precision kicks and double-team moves.

Bowens hit Fenix with his boombox while the ref was distracted, leaving Penta all alone against two men for a little while. Caster hit a big slam for a quick two-count.

Fenix recovered and came in to hit a double cutter to both members of The Acclaimed at the same time. After a few more exchanges, The Lucha Bros picked up the win to retain their titles.

Grade: B-

Analysis

Having The Lucha Bros carry the AAA tag titles and the AEW belts to the ring helped make them look like a big deal. AEW has done a decent job using titles from other companies, but it feels like we are seeing these belts appear more often recently.

When you have a match with a breakneck pace like this, a few missteps are bound to happen. What matters most is how they recover from those mistakes, and both teams excelled at making things that might not have been intentional look good.

The match was a little on the short side, but the action was good from start to finish.

Skye Blue vs. Jade Cargill

Jade may still be a rookie herself, but Blue is also a newcomer, so experience wasn't as much of a factor as it has been in most of Jade's matches.

Blue got in a little offense before Jade caught her in her finisher to pick up the win in what felt like less than a minute.

Thunder Rosa ran down with a chair to stop Jade from continuing to attack Blue.

Grade: C-

Analysis

This was a standard squash match designed to make Jade look like a beast in the ring. It worked, but it was still a short match with less than a dozen moves.

Jade is still green, so having short matches helps mask some of the areas she still needs to improve. It's just hard to care about any bout that is over this quickly.

Ricky Starks vs. Brian Cage (FTW Title)

The former teammates on Team Taz did battle in the final match of the night over the FTW title in a Philly Street Fight. Taz was on commentary, but Hook was conspicuous by his absence.

Starks tried to bring a chair into the ring, but Cage stopped him and started hitting lefts and rights. He whipped Starks from corner to corner before hitting a big belly-to-belly suplex. He picked up the chair and hit the champ in the back a few times.

Cage grabbed a trashcan full of weapons, but it was Starks who used the pool cue to his advantage. He spiked Cage with a DDT but was too hurt to follow up with a pin right away.

Starks had the upper hand during the break and continued to use all of the weapons to his advantage after we returned. Cage nailed him with a kick to the face and smashed the trashcan over his head.

Hook and Powerhouse Hobbs tried to interfere, but Cage took them both out. This allowed Starks to hit a big Spear for a two-count. With a little more help from his stablemates, Starks hit his finisher for the win.

Grade: B-

Analysis

Matches with a lot of weapon spots are tricky because if they don't produce any blood, it doesn't look convincing. Starks showed a little color toward the end to make it look good.

Starks is already a great performer for somebody so young, so it is going to be interesting to see where he is in five years when he really hits his stride.

This match was good and the finish made sense. Starks picked up a big win, but he needed help to do it, so Cage doesn't suffer much from the loss.
