Vicente Luque still angling for 'Fight of the Year' against Nate Diaz in December

Vicente Luque hasn’t given up in his pursuit to fight Nate Diaz.

Luque (21-7-1 MMA, 14-3 UFC) has yet to hear back since Diaz (20-13 MMA, 15-11 UFC) accepted his callout on social media in September, but is staying ready for December in case the fight comes to fruition.

“When two guys want to fight, you’ve got to make them fight,” Luque told MMA Junkie. “What else can you do about it? But I think the UFC, they’ve got to figure some things out. I talked to my manger Ali (Abdelaziz), and I let him know I really want this fight. I’ll be ready November, December. Whenever they want to make it, I’m going to be ready and we’re trying to make it happen. I know Nate wants it, as well. He’s looking forward to fighting in December, so I think it makes sense.

“Whenever he wants to have it, I’m going to be in. I’m going to stay ready and if it makes sense for the UFC – I think it does because it’s a big fight. I might not be that trash talker, but I can fight. I can go in there and put on a show. So the fans are going to want to watch this fight. Whenever I match with somebody, they’re going to watch it, and a match with a guy like Diaz, that’s even better. I think it makes sense. I think the UFC can make this happen, and we’ll see.”

No longer a prospect, Luque emerged as a contender when he scored back-to-back submission finishes of former champion Tyron Woodley and Michael Chiesa.

And with only a few fighters ranked ahead of him, Luque knows it’ll take time to get his next fight booked, but unranked Diaz certainly fits his bill as he works towards a title shot.

“With my style, sometimes it’s hard to get a fight,” Luque said. “I am No. 4 right now. I know there are maybe guys ranked lower that want to fight me, but I’m looking to fight guys that are going to propel me to that title fight and those guys that can propel me, sometimes it’s hard to get them to fight because my style is dangerous. I know that if they study me, they’ll see it’s not going to be an easy fight, win or lose. It’s not going to be an easy fight for anyone if they fight me. I think that makes it kind of challenging, but at the same time, I don’t know – I have a big opportunity with Nate Diaz. He wants that fight, I want that fight, so I think I couldn’t ask for anything better. To have a guy like Diaz wanting to fight me is awesome.

“Me and Nate is ‘Fight of the Year’ potential. My style, a lot of people thought my fight with Chiesa would be a boring one, and I knew I don’t have boring fights. No way that’s going to happen because I’m going to make it exciting in some kind of way. I don’t know how it’s going to happen, but it’s going to happen and at the end of the night, it was a great fight. It’s just my style. When I get in there, I bring the action and I’m going to entertain.”

Luque is also open to facing the likes of Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards, but with his teammate Gilbert Burns also vying for gold, he has a proposition.

“I’m ready for him or any other guy,” Luque said. “There’s Leon Edwards, we don’t know what’s going on – Masvidal in on that. Masvidal is waiting on Leon, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. There’s me, there’s Gilbert also, so maybe he’ll fight Gilbert and we’ll see what’s going to go on. I’m going to stay ready. In my mind, the perfect card in December would be me and Nate Diaz and then Masvidal and Gilbert Burns. That would be on the same night. That would be awesome.”
