Hello, Wisconsin! A spinoff of That ’70s Show — appropriately titled That ’90s Show, as it’s set several decades after the original — is in the works at Netflix.
The new series picks up in 1995, with Eric and Donna’s daughter Leia Forman visiting her grandparents (returning cast members Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp) in Point Place, Wis., where she comes of age with a new generation of kids “under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red,” per the official logline. “Sex, drugs and rock ’n roll never dies, it just changes clothes.”
Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, the original series’ creators, are writing and executive-producing alongside daughter Lindsey Turner. Fellow EP Gregg Mettler will also serve as showrunner.
That ’70s Show originally aired for eight seasons (1998–2006) on Fox. In addition to Rupp and Smith, the cast included Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Danny Masterson, Wilmer Valderrama and — in the final season, which doesn’t actually exist — Josh Meyers.
It should be noted that this is not the first time a That ’70s Show offshoot has been attempted. That ’80s Show, whose cast included Glenn Howerton and Chyler Leigh, aired for 13 episodes on Fox in 2002. The short-lived series was set in 1984, with the loose connection of Howerton’s character being the cousin of Topher Grace’s Eric.
Are you excited to head back to the ’90s with your friends from the ’70s? And which original cast members do you hope will make cameos? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
Well it’s doubtful that Ashton and Mila would do more than a cameo. Danny is pretty much disgraced, so no. Slim chance that Wilmer would show up, and I could do without Laura, but would enjoy seeing Topher.
If they could get Ashton and Mila for a cameo than they could probably get Wilmer to do one. I agree Danny Masterson is a non-starter, I wouldn’t have any issues with Laura especially given that she’s left Scientology. Topher is just a no brainer
Since she left Scientology🤣
Ashton has a pre-existing creative relationship with Netflix, so they could probably get him just by offering the both of them producer’s credit.
But would they offer a producer credit simply for a cameo? Probably not.
Probably not for a cameo, but maybe for doing one or two significant guest spots each season not to mention it would possibly make getting Mila to ink a deal a lot easier
I called for this revival several months back in the comment section of a Deadline article. And they definitely need to mention that Steven Hyde is serving a lengthy prison term. :-)
That wouldn’t be fair to Hyde. Not standing up for Masterson, but Hyde was one of the best written characters of the series. Big part of his story was overcoming his childhood and Red and Kitty helping him become, who he could be. That character already suffered injustice in the way how they ruined his relationship with Jackie, which helped both of them grow a lot. Making him a criminal would be disservice to both his character and Kitty’s and Red’s as well.
Dumb$$$!
Set several decades ahead of the original? Sounds like 2.
Right there is why you don’t have any friends.
Yet he’s not wrong.
It’s set in the 90s so it would be after the series ended on December 31, 1979.
I’m throwing Mina Sundwall’s name out there into the universe to get cast. She plays Micks daughter of Legends of Tomorrow she was the first person that came to mind. Besides, with Mick leaving the Legends she won’t be returning anytime soon.
I love this idea. She’s been great on Legends and Lost In Space and could definitely pull off the comedy/sarcasm the show is known for.
She would be so good, and Lost in Space (another Netflix show) has wrapped its series production. That would be dream casting!
Whoever thinks this is a good idea needs Red’s foot in their a$$.
The ranch delivered good numbers and it was essentially that 70s show on a ranch
But The Ranch had Sam Elliott. Big draw.
If Laura’s not in it, I’m not watching!
first thought was Emma Kenney from shameless and the conners!!!!
Oh she’d also be good.
Of course Eric names his daughter Leia. I’m shocked Donna agreed to it.
I just caught that! Didn’t realize and yea, surprised she agreed.
I don’t get it. Explain. I’m curious and wanna know. Thanks
Star Wars.
I’m not. Donna truly loved Eric. That last two seasons were pretty much about they were rushing things because they thought they had to get away. They were young and teenagers. In the end you just known that they were gonna be together. I can’t even think about the final scene without years coming to my eyes. Yeah it’s just tv. Love is a wonderful thing and not everyone get to experience it. This show has helped meet through some dark times.
Honestly I wouldn’t have been interested in a reboot or revival with the main characters. But Kitty and Red, with a new generation? That’s actually a concept I can get behind! Hot damn!
Right. I been watch Kirkwood Smith for a long time love him as an actor
So another attempt at a spin-off. “That ‘80s Show”, which sounded bad at the time, may have just been too close to the original’s finale, that’s why it lasted a hot minute. Besides, “The Goldbergs” have done it better.
.
Maybe “That ‘90s Show” will do better as it just resonates with more people…many of those ‘90s era shows are still on whether reruns and/or now streaming. It could be the right time to hop on the nostalgic train. Ok, now I feel old😂
Omg, this makes me so happy. I wish the final season didn’t exist. But other than that I loved the first six seasons. They lost a lot when they didn’t know what to do with the kids, and found a reason for Eric to stay home instead to got to college. After that he just wasn’t the same and I understand, why Topher Grace only agreed to do one more season after his contract ended.
And I still wish for a Jackie & Hyde reunion. Which is of course not happening.
And what makes me feel really old, That’s 70’s show was set 22 years earlier. And now it has been 23 years since the first season started…
Red an Kitty were great. Especially Kitty but don’t think that will be enough to hold a show together. The times have changed a lot since those beyond clueless teenagers were around. Can’t imagine they would have amounted to much by 1990’s.
You must live in the future. I still see the same things with teenagers today
It will be red and kitty raising their troubled daughter while their is a house full of kids getting into trouble just like the original. I doubt you will see eric or Donna. I think they let fame get to their head. More likely it would be Ashton, Mila and Wilmer maybe for a few episodes. There will be alot of foot in asses.
I think Topher would do it. Hes talked about 70s show on podcasts. He truly enjoyed his time on the show. I think a couple of guest episodes, like the legacy actors did on Fuller House would be appropriate.
As for Laura I have no idea. If Topher agrees maybe it would b easier to convince her
More Red and Kitty? I’d gladly watch them. Will it have a great ensemble cast like the original? I don’t know how it could. I’ll sure miss the rest of the gang.
Maybe Netflix could put That 70’s Show back on their lineup. No one has it! I know Netflix had it for 10 great years and kudos and a big thank you to them for it. I miss it, though. It’s always on my requisite holiday watchlist.
Even if we can’t get a Hyde or Jackie cameo they better slip it in that Jackie and Hyde are together because putting her with Fez was a travesty. Jackie and Hyde were the best couple on that show besides Red and Kitty. Eric and Donna were toxic for each other. They brought out the worst in each other while Hyde and Jackie brought out the best. They balanced each other out. I love Fez, but he really was a creeper and he constantly harassed and even assaulted the girls. Dude didn’t know the meaning of consent.
No, Hyde and Jackie were toxic for each other. Eric and Donna actually worked on their relationship and tried to make it work. Jackie and Fez were sweet together. That’s the farthest thing from a tragedy. They brought out the best out of each other unlike Hyde and Jackie who brought out the worst.
Thank you. THIS. I really hated for years that Jackie chose Hyde instead of Fez in season 3. In the earlier seasons, Jackie and Fez had so much potential and I think it’s crazy that people still turn a blind eye to that, just because their dynamic was revived terribly in season 8. Kelso is no better either. He cheated on Jackie so many times. If anything, Fez deserves so much better than what these delusional Jackie and Hyde supporters thing. It’s pure delusion up to this point. It’s madness, lol.
Danny is obviously a no, Ashton and Mila might do cameos or possibly special guest star. Wilmer is busy with NCIS but could come back for an ep or two depending on schedules.
I think Prepon is the most likely out of the core 6 to come back, schedule wise (for most of them 😬), and I know he’s busy with Home Economics (which I love) but would like Topher to make an appearance at some stage…even if the longstanding rumours are still true that he never got on with rest of cast. Although I feel he could be the Olsen twins of this cast and they’ll keep asking and he won’t turn up.
Whatever happens, I actually hope the most we see of any of them 6 is recurring as it’ll distract from the new show.
Definitely here for this anyway
According to Topher himself he got along just fine with the rest of the cast.
Years ago they had a cast reunion and he was there laughing and smiling
As 134sc mentions, Topher got along with the cast just fine. However, I don’t think he was friends and hung out with the rest of the cast.
From what I can gather, the rumor that Topher didn’t get along with the cast comes from the final season. Topher was supposed to cameo in a few of the early episodes in that season (but decided not to).
However, the problem seems tied mostly to the last episode. Topher was supposed to be in several scenes in the last episode, but he arrived late (which is why he is only in two short scenes that were obviously shot at the last minute). Several cast members were rather annoyed with him over that situation (especially Smith from what I understand).
If Red and Kitty are coming back, so am I. I hope the rest of the original cast (except Danny) at least peek in.
I don’t think it could ever measure up to the original, which had a wonderful pitch-perfect ensemble that is extremely hard to replicate. But I will gladly watch Red and Kitty.
I also hope there’s at least a mention at some point that Jackie broke up with Fez and ended back up with Hyde. I can’t even watch the last season anymore because of that atrocity.
Please include Bob!!! (and the spirit of Midge, she could still be mentioned as doing kooky things.)
And yes, as correctly pointed out, it’s only 2 decades, not several. However, looking at how the world changed, it sure feels like several.
:)
OMG – What will Red have to say about the Clintons, lol
Midge” Tanya Roberts” died earlier this year. Maybe they could add that to the show as à way to remember her.
As did the (original) actress that played Eric’s sister, Laurie Foreman.
Red
” Foot
Asses”
It is the most obvious spin off but it could work. Red and Kitty was hands down two of the best parts in the original and if their characters are same like before, they could actually make this show popular again. They just need a strong ensemble and it will be a hit. Also 90s are very in right now. The nostalgia for 90s is all time high right now. The fashion, the style, the type of movies/music, everything 90s resonate very good with Gen Z nowadays. So a show set in 90s will surely see some eyeballs
It goes with our nature of nostalgia. During the 90s and 2000s, we were looking back fondly at the 60s and 70s. In this last decade we’ve been paying remembrance to the 80s. Now, it;s going to be during the 20s that we start looking back fondly at the 90s. So this makes sense. You’re right about needing to find the right ensemble. hat’s going to be key.
It’s weird that Eric and Donna’s child would end up living with her grandparents but Debra and Kurtwood alone make this worth exploring. It at least sounds intriguing. I’m sure age has made Red far more patient and nurturing.
I am very anxious to see the whole gang back together… Hopefully they dont change characters. They can all have jobs n kids. Married. Or in serious relationships. I am so excited to hear this series coming up!!
I hope all the OGs return minus the rapist. But also it will be a shame if they make it like Eric and Donna abandoned their kid.
I would rather have a show with Red & Kitty now living in a retirement community. Somehow they end up becoming guardians of a pre teen. That would open up a whole new set of plot lines. It is going to be difficult to get guest appearences with several of the regulars. Regarding Hyde I wonder how they will deal with that character & if they somehow write him completely out oif the show
Well, Hyde was always supposed to be destined to end up in jail…
Exactly.
They could explain his absence by saying he joined some crazy religious cult, became a serial rapist, and got sentenced to serious prison time.
He’s holding out hope that he can make parole someday, and then have a cameo in that 10’s show.
WWWoooooo! That is great news, we will watch! Sounds great to continue on with same cast members of Kitty and Red.
That 70s show was legendary. No matter what you do with an encore, it will never measure up. Might be OK, but I think it will be another <one season attempt.
BRING BACK DANNY MASTERSON HE IS INNOCENT!!!
Sure he is, sweetie
And the moon is made of green cheese and there really is a Santa Claus.
