Two way Celtics sharpshooter Sam Hauser says going against Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown 'testing me in a good way'

A lot of ink has been spilled on the Boston Celtics shaking up their roster after a few mostly moribund seasons with much of the same cast treading water at a time the team is supposed to be rounding into the form of a contender, but not so much about the only player currently on the roster as a two way player.

That player, undrafted sharpshooting forward Sam Hauser, could actually contribute to the team meaningfully this season given his in-demand NBA-ready skill and his playing a position of need for the team if things go well. Speaking with Celtics Blog’s Adam Taylor on a recent “Celtics Pod” podcast, Hauser opened up about the season ahead and splitting time between the Celtics and their G League team the Maine Celtics (formerly Red Claws).

“I’m excited for both situations,” related Hauser.

“Being in Maine and being Boston with the new two way rules, I could have a maximum of 50 games with the Boston Celtics,” he added.

“Every day, I’m just trying to build good days on top of good days, and I think overall I’m just trying to perfect my shooting and in different ways — coming off the screens maybe, coming off taking one dribble and shooting, spot shooting. I think overall, just trying to take my shooting to another level is something I’ve really worked on. And then overall my defense, I think in summer league I did pretty solid on defense.”

“But now, going against NBA All-Stars that are on our team like Jaylen (Brown) and Jayson (Tatum), it’s really testing me in a good way, and I think I’m improving on that end as well,” he finished.

While we should expect to see Hauser get some run with the parent club regardless of how things play out this season, his defense may determine how much he gets as much as his shooting does.

And if he is taking careful notes from a pair of top-notch defenders like his All-Star teammates, that run might just end being a considerably longer one than the amount of ink we’ve seen spilled on Hauser so far might have you assume.
