Themes of homecoming and commemorating one’s roots are constantly being reimagined and unpacked in hip hop. In her newest single, “Since Young,” Thai-Trinidadian rapper, singer, and songwriter Tsunari revisits her journey as a biracial artist and proclaims that she’s “here to win, not here to fit in.”

The track chronicles her story thus far, reflecting on her multiethnic background and experiences as a biracial young girl raised in Korat, Thailand, living in Saudi Arabia as a child, and pursuing a full-time music career in London. Navigating a world that does not always celebrate diversity, Tsunari resists non-conformity by proudly embracing her roots and carving a space for herself.

The singer-songwriter also opened up about her childhood experience and how music provided her solace through tough times. “I lived an interesting but miserable childhood,” she says of being caught up in a terrorist attack in her school while she was in Saudi Arabia during the 9/11 attacks.

With “Since Young,” Tsunari hopes her ethos of individuality and pride in her heritage speaks for itself in her music. Merging drill beats and traditional Thai instrumentation, the track is a fresh, experimental take of the underdog narrative. “Since You” is an unapologetic celebration of the artist’s journey, reminding us that homecoming, more so than a place, is also what you make of yourself.

“Since Young” is Tsunari’s latest single following “ฟาด (Whip it)” featuring Thai rapper and singer MILLI and “Fruity Loops,” which were both released earlier this year.
