When I think about Paris Texas, my mind automatically goes to the iconic Cartoon Network series, The PowerPuff Girls. My mind finds its way to the intro scene when the scientist is throwing all of the different chemicals and concoctions into a test tube, but somehow comes out with three superheroes. In many way ways, that’s how it feels when listening to the new Paris Texas EP, Red Hand Akimbo. Across five tracks, my ear hears Run The Jewels, punk rock elements, Pharrell, Tokyo Police Club and several other pieces of music I’ve enjoyed over the years. In the end, Paris Texas comes out of that musical gumbo that my ear hears. Even then, I don’t even think that properly covers all that Red Hand Akimbo is and will hopefully become in the future. When I did a bit of research and stumbled upon an interview the duo did with Ana Zanes of the Document Journal before releasing their last project, it kind of all made sense. The boisterous duo is creating music and letting their creative process take them wherever it may rather than letting it go the other way around.
“[We’re] just making sh*t,” Felix of Paris Texas said.
“Nothing in there is a lie. There was no mission statement. We’re not going into this thinking we’re breaking new ground. It’s like, yo, we’re just doing what we want to do—if it sounds good.”
To their credit, it sounds good and better yet, it sounds unique. If you don’t believe me, check out the EP below.
