Mercedes driver, Sir Lewis Hamilton, could have joined the most successful team in Formula 1, Scuderia Ferrari, but the timing never seemed right for both parties.

When asked as to why the 7-time world champion never made the move to join Ferrari, he delves into his dream, along with any F1 fan for that matter, of driving for the famous Prancing Horses. Hamilton enjoys driving his Ferraris, but he acknowledges that he isn't able to drive the one.

Via Ian Parkes:

“For everyone that's a dream position to be in. It was just never really fully on the cards for me.”

“I'll never know fully exactly why, but I wish them all the best and I'm going to spend the next bit of my time stopping them from winning the championship.”

“Of course, I look at the colour and the red, it's just… it's still the red. I have a couple of Ferraris at home, so I do get to drive a Ferrari, just not the one.

Former Ferrari team principal, and current F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, makes a reference to the film “Sliding Doors” in that the opportunity was on the table —talks were definitely taking place during Hamilton's contract years and the Scuderia had a genuine interest in signing the Englishman.

“Today I think that period has passed away. There are moments in life…there is a movie that is very important to remember ‘Sliding Doors’.

“There are moments where if you do get into an elevator or you stay on another floor. That was the situation with Lewis at that specific time of his life.

Ultimately, Hamilton now has 7 Formula 1 world drivers' championships under his belt, and his move to join Mercedes back in 2012 looks to have been the right decision all along.
