Celtic have enjoyed a mixed start to life with Ange Postecoglou as manager. At times, they have shown a lot of potential and even went on a six-game winning streak earlier in the campaign when they outscored their opponents 24 to 4. But on the other hand, there have been several disappointing results as well as they find themselves sixth in the Premiership table after the first 8 league games of the season.

There is no doubt that Celtic can go on to become a great side under the management of Postecoglou. But for that to happen, they will have to iron out a lot of problems in this current side.

One of them is the balance in midfield. Following the departure of Ryan Christie on transfer deadline day, Postecoglou has often gone with a combination of Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic and David Turnbull in the middle of the park.

And while both Turnbull and Rogic bring a lot to the table individually, they just don’t seem to work together.

James Cairney, writing in The Herald, believes that Jamie McGrath can be the solution for Celtic’s midfield dilemma.

Now, there is no doubt about the fact that McGrath has been very impressive in recent seasons. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 17 goals and provided 6 assists in the 2020/21 campaign.

He is great on the ball and has shown tremendous improvement this season when it comes to the creative side of things. He is also one of the best players in the Premiership under pressure. That could be a very important trait to have in Postecoglou’ fast-paced, possession-based style of football.

Perhaps most importantly, McGrath’s current deal with St Mirren is believed to be running out at the end of the season meaning it might not be difficult for Celtic to sign him in January. Or, they could wait for the summer and sign him on a free transfer unless the player ends up extending his contract or joining another club.
