While on vacation in Italy, one of our spy photographers couldn't resist paying a visit to Maranello, the home of Ferrari. Here, he discovered a heavily camouflaged prototype of a new Ferrari Icona supercar roaming the streets and hastily snapped some photos for our viewing pleasure. In truth, this isn't the first time Ferrari's new Icona supercar has been caught in the wild. However, these new photos are much clearer than previous sightings captured in low-quality videos.

Sadly, our photographer could only get a few shots of the rear, but this is easily the car's most dramatic angle. The prototype is allegedly based on a LaFerrari Aperta, extensively modified with a large wing dominating the rear. It also boasts wider fenders and rides lower to the ground than the regular LaFerrari Aperta. Clearly, Ferrari is cooking up something special.

Rumors suggest Ferrari's new Icona is inspired by the stunning Ferrari 330 P4 Le Mans racer that competed with the legendary Ford GT40 in the 1960s. Like the 330 P4, we can see the side mirrors are mounted to the front fenders instead of the A-pillars like on the LaFerrari Aperta.

Power will reportedly be provided by a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12, which generates 819 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque in the 812 Competizione. Considering the 330 P4 tribute car is expected to cost somewhere between $2.5 million and $3 million, it could have even more power on tap.

Ferrari's new Icona car will be a successor to the SP1 and SP2 Monza, which were inspired by 1950s Ferrari racers like the 750 Monza and 860 Monza. Production of the SP1 and SP2 Monza were limited to a combined 499 units, but the modern-day 330 P4 could be even rarer, with production reportedly capped at around 300 examples.
