How to Play Multiplayer Co-Op
This page of the IGN Far Cry 6 wiki guide and walkthrough will help you play with your friends in Far Cry 6’s new, expansive multiplayer, including information on how to play co op, how many players can join co op, and more.
Is There Co Op in Far Cry 6?
The short answer is yes, there is co op in Far Cry 6. However, this is limited to online co op. Both players will need a console and a copy of the game. There is no couch co op, otherwise known as split-screen local co op, in Far Cry 6.
Far Cry 6 Cross Play
Both Far Cry 6 players will need to play on the same platform - whether that be Xbox, PC, or PlayStation.
How Co Op Works in Far Cry 6
Multiplayer is a bit different in Far Cry 6 than in previous games. For one, the entire campaign can be played in co-op multiplayer once it's unlocked, and you can drop-in and drop-out at your leisure.
How to Unlock Co Op
To unlock multiplayer co op in Far Cry 6, you must first complete the fourth story mission, Du Or Die.
How Many Players Can Play Far Cry 6 Co Op?
A total of two players can join a single co-op session in Far Cry 6. There is no four-player co-op.
Far Cry 6 Co Op Progression
The campaign story progression will only be saved for the host player, however, the guests can keep the items, upgraded items, experience, and more while playing in co-op mode in Far Cry 6.
How To Play Co Op
Jumping into multiplayer is easy in Far Cry 6, and it isn’t solely restricted to people on your friend list, either.
- Choose Co-Op in the top right
- Choose play with a friend to choose someone from your friend's list, or:
- Choose Search for a partner to recruit someone random online
To join random's online session, instead choose "be a partner" and "set as available" - you will then be notified when someone's session is found that you can join.
To start, make sure you have completed Operation 4: Du Or Die. Once you have, go into the Menu (the hamburger button on PlayStation 5, which is located immediately to the right of the touchpad) and select the Co-Op menu in the upper right corner.
From here, you can add friends from a variety of places, for example: on PS5, you can add multiplayer partners via Search, Voice Chat, Parties, Friends, Game Owners, and Played Together
Things You Should Know About Far Cry 6 Multiplayer
- Keep Your Friends Close: You’ll need to stay close together during your co-op session, or you’ll take damage. Once you move 269 meters away, you’ll get a warning to stay close to your coop partner, but you won’t take damage until you reach 280m away (a distance roughly five times the length of your location arrow)
- Everybody Gets Loot! Opening the chest as the host or co-op guest gives loot to everyone. Sometimes the item will be the same, but it will usually be different, particularly when one of you has already opened the chest in their own game. Because of this, it can actually be beneficial to team up with someone who hasn’t opened any chests, because you can get bonus loot!
- Searching For Chests: Saving Libertad members reveals the same caches for both players, which is fantastic, because you’ll need to stay close together, anyway.
- Locations, Locations, Locations: If you purchased the locations of things like Roosters, USB Sticks, and more, your co-op partner will also be able to see them. Use this and search out all the coolest items together, sharing your information.
- This is probably a bug, but… Dying and respawning in co-op can reveal guerrilla hideout locations in completely different parts of the map you haven’t been to yet, reveal dialogue from secret endings, and more.
