The New England Patriots drafted Mac Jones to be their next quarterback, hopefully a franchise-altering talent. After four weeks, Jones has been almost exactly what he was billed to be: a mature and smart pocket passer who will prioritize efficiency over the big play.

Jones’ stat line isn’t pretty, largely due to a rough, three-interception game in Week 4. On the year, he has completed 70% of his passes (112/160) for 1,012 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. The Patriots, meanwhile, are 1-3, with a win over the New York Jets and losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New Orleans Saints and the Miami Dolphins.

Because Jones has been exactly as billed — nothing more and nothing less — I’m giving him a B- for the first four games. He has been razor-sharp, however, when he’s allowed to play his game: that of a point guard, dishing to his playmakers at receiver and tight end. That said, he has been unable to get the deep ball going, with significant issues and inefficiency on passes beyond 20 yards. Their 1-3 start will make a playoff run enormously challenging. He has been a below-average NFL quarterback and a solid rookie through these first four starts.
