Patrick Mahomes' Film Analysis Discussed by Ex-Chiefs Assistant Brad Childress

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes rarely hesitates to take chances and shots down the field, and that is apparently a mentality he has had since entering the NFL.

Speaking to Jayson Jenks, Rustin Dodd and Nate Taylor of The Athletic, former Chiefs assistant coach Brad Childress recalled the one season he spent working with Mahomes in 2017.

Childress mentioned an exercise he used to do with the team's quarterbacks, which was to show them a play and ask them where they would throw the ball. Childress noted that traditionally the choices would be an underneath throw of about four yards or an over-the-top throw of about 18 yards.

The veteran coach noted that Mahomes once said, "S--t, I'd throw the post."

Childress described his response, saying: "I'd look at him like, 'F--king what,'" before realizing that there was indeed a post route available 65 yards down the field.

Once he became aware of Mahomes' ability to hit those types of throws unlike most quarterbacks, Childress said he changed his response to: "Yeah, good idea."

The one season Childress worked with Mahomes was the talented signal-caller's rookie campaign, which he spent behind veteran Alex Smith as the backup.

Kansas City selected Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft in hopes that he could become a star quarterback, but he has undoubtedly already exceeded all expectations.

In his first season as a starter in 2018, Mahomes was named NFL MVP when he completed 66.0 percent of his passes for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

He followed that up by leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win in 2019 and took them back to the Super Bowl last season as well, although they fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mahomes is now just 26 years of age and in the midst of his fifth NFL season, and he has already established himself as an all-time great.

The Chiefs didn't hesitate to sign Mahomes to a record-breaking 10-year, $450 million contract extension prior to last season, and early indications are that it was the right move.

Kansas City is off to a slow start this season by its standards at 2-2, but given that Mahomes has reached the AFC Championship Game or better in each of his three seasons as a starter, there is plenty of reason to believe he and the Chiefs will get it turned around in short order.
