2021-2022 Flyers Training Camp: The Prequel to the Finale

Following the last round of roster cuts, the Philadelphia Flyers took to the ice for a practice session before their preseason finale tomorrow night.

After the final roster cuts, the Philadelphia Flyers took to the ice today for another training camp practice.

Before the practice session, Chuck Fletcher spoke with the media regarding roster changes. Notably, among the topics of discussion was Morgan Frost. The decision to cut him from the NHL roster sent shockwaves through the fanbase.

Unquestionably, the Flyers do have an issue at hand. Is Scott Laughton the right decision for a 2C role?

According to Fletcher, he observed a decent defensive camp from Frost but expressed that he needs to get his confidence back:

“The best thing for him, long term, is to play in an environment where he can get his confidence. It’s the best thing for him and it’s the best thing for us.”

Alain Vigneault likes Frost. He’s remaining “patient” with him following Philadelphia’s preseason victory against the Boston Bruins. The decision to cut him with a reservation to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms was a Fletcher decision. Once he finds his gear, proving to the coaches that his skill set is in tune, he’ll advance to the Flyers roster.

Furthermore, Fletcher stated Kevin Hayes is closer to the six-week expectation of his recovery timeframe. It also sounds as if Wade Allison doesn’t require surgery, but he’ll remain out indefinitely. Laughton fills in the 2C role, which is a jump from his typical position. As the Flyers move through October, they’ll be practicing more often.

Jackson Cates seemingly became the 4C but, Nate Thompson began on the fourth line with Garrett Wilson and Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

Thompson has a place in the bottom six. The Philadelphia Flyers penalty kill has been abysmal, which is why Thompson earns a role on the fourth line. He’s a physical grinder. I should note that the 4LW reps weren’t exclusive to Wilson. He did rotate with Cates.
