Stolen turtles returned to Autrey Mill Nature Preserve

JOHNS CREEK — The five box turtles that were stolen from Autrey Mill Nature preserve over two weeks ago were returned this week, according to nature preserve officials.

In a post on the nature preserve’s Facebook page, officials thanked the Johns Creek Police Department and the community for helping return the turtles.

“Our Box Turtles have been returned!! A big thank you to Detective Bucki and the Johns Creek Police Department and the community for your calls of concern and help getting our Animal Ambassadors home,” the post said.

Box turtles are illegal to keep as pets in the state of Georgia and Autrey Mill has a special permit to keep the turtles to educate the public about the importance of wildlife conservation.

The nature preserve posted a surveillance video last month showing the suspects taking the turtles from their enclosure.
