On Thursday, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays are set to meet for the third time in postseason history.

It’s been a while since their last October meeting. They first faced off in the 2008 ALCS, besting Boston in seven games. Five years later, fortune favored Boston in the 2013 ALDS, and the Rays only managed to win one game. Since their last postseason set, the Red Sox have won two World Series (13, 18), while the Rays have made a Wild Card appearance of their own, won the division the last two years, and the 2020 pennant. Their first championship continues to elude them.

The Sox are coming off a scorching 6-2 victory over the Yankees in the Wild Card game, while the Rays have had three days to rest after winning 100 regular-season games for the first time in franchise history.

Rays Pitcher Today: Shane McClanahan

Shane McClanahan has officially come full circle; he made his debut on October 5, 2020, in last year’s ALDS. Tonight, he’ll make his first career postseason start.

The rookie McClanahan had a 2.81 ERA over three regular-season games against Boston this year. He has four games of postseason experience under his belt, but pitched less than two innings in each, and only stayed scoreless in two of them.

Eduardo Rodriguez, who missed all of 2020 with COVID and resulting viral myocarditis, gets the start for Boston. He has a 4.72 ERA over 32 regular-season games, including four starts against the Rays.

Rodriguez has eight games of playoff experience, but only one start, back in the 2018 World Series. He allowed four earned runs on four hits and didn’t make it out of the sixth inning.
