This NBA offseason, there were a lot of trade rumors involving the Cleveland Cavaliers. They had the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and some people believed they could try and trade that selection.
They ultimately used the pick on USC center, Evan Mobley. But, the trade rumors didn’t stop there for the Cavaliers.
Point guard Collin Sexton has also had his name mentioned in the rumor mill multiple times. Part of the reason he was available this offseason was that he and the team were far apart on negotiations for a contract extension.
Sexton is entering his fourth season in the NBA, so he has until the first day of the regular season to hammer out a deal with the Cavaliers. If not, he will become a restricted free agent next offseason.
Restricted free agency can be difficult to navigate. Some players are left in limbo, as teams do not want to tie up money and wait to see if the team holding the rights to the restricted free agent will match the offer sheet. They could be waiting, have an offer matched, and miss out on other free agents that signed elsewhere during the waiting period.
