Simple Forms Release Debut Single “Reaching for the Shadow”
Based in Portland, Oregon, Simple Forms are a new band who would seemed to be formed out of at least part of an outfit called Night Swim. That band, with the lineup of guitarist Dustin Rieseberg (Norska), bassist Aaron Rieseberg (Norska, YOB), vocalist Jason Oswald (Norska), guitarist Rob Shaffer (Dark Castle) and drummer Ben Stoller (Hot Victory) played their first show in April 2019 and were in the studio circa that time as well. I know Aaron Rieseberg and Stoller and Shaffer carry over into Simple Forms, but as to Oswald or Dustin Rieseberg, I’m not even sure at this point as I haven’t seen a lineup or a band photo or anything like that.
[EDIT 10/06: The band’s lineup is the same Night Swim. It was a name change to avoid confusion with other acts with the same moniker.]
What they have is a song posted from a five-song EP that’s reportedly near completion. “Reaching for the Shadow” is heavy, atmospheric and progressive, rousing in melody through its hook and still crunching enough to have an aggressive undercurrent despite the spiritual seeking of the lyric. I don’t know the status of the rest of the material or what “close to releasing” means in terms of actual dates, but none of these guys, whichever of them might actually be involved, are in their first band, and I doubt they’d be putting anything out there at all if there wasn’t more coming to back it up.
