Michigan health officials reported 7,674 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, bringing the total to 1,047,011.
State health leaders reported 92 new deaths from the virus. Of these, 47 were identified during a vital records review. As of Wednesday, 21,231 people have died from COVID-19 in Michigan.
Both the total new cases and total deaths represent those recorded over a two-day period from Tuesday, Oct. 5 to Wednesday, Oct. 6.

State officials said the staff at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reviews records every Monday, Wednesday and Friday that identify COVID-19 as a cause of death. They then match the records with laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19.
The state health department launched an online dashboard Dec. 14, 2020, to track the vaccine distribution across the state.
As of Oct. 4, 4,067 sites had enrolled to administer the vaccine. As of Oct. 4, 13,423,405 vaccines had been delivered, and 10,012,860 doses had been administered.
As of Oct. 5, 68.3% of Michiganders 16 and up had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the state's website, progress was based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's data tracker, which includes Michigan residents vaccinated by providers not currently reporting to the state dashboard: Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, Bureau of Prisons, and most out-of-state providers. Data provided in the Michigan COVID-19 Dashboard below slightly undercounts the true number of doses administered to Michigan residents.

According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the United States has seen 44,019,917 cases and 706,861 deaths. Worldwide, 236,124,762 people have contracted the disease, and 4,822,308 have died.
As of Friday, Oct. 1, a total of 931,115 people in Michigan had recovered from the virus. A patient is considered recovered when they are clear of the disease 30 days after initial onset.
State health officials report that Michigan labs have completed 17,208,778 tests as of Oct. 6 to check for infection by the virus, SARS-CoV-2, that causes the disease.
As of Sept. 29, there have been 25,872 confirmed cases among residents in long-term care facilities in Michigan. There have been 5,771 reported resident deaths in long-term facilities.
