Dolly Parton Speaks on ‘Little Tattoos’ She Got to Cover Up Scars

It may or may not surprise some country music fans to know that iconic singer Dolly Parton has some “tasteful” tattoos inked on her.

“I have a few little tattoos here and there,” she said.

The country star opened up about the specific designs she has and why they mean so much to her in an interview with W magazine. Though she didn’t say how many specifically she has, Dolly Parton mentioned that most of them are based on a tiny little insect that meant a lot to her as a child.

“Butterflies don’t sting, they don’t bite, and they are so beautiful,” Parton told the outlet. “And I just kind of related to them with my own personality. I claimed them as my little symbol. I used to get in trouble with my mom, ’cause they’d have to come find me and I’d be chasing a butterfly from one bush to another.”

Dolly Parton explained that her initial reasoning for getting tattoos was actually more cosmetic, to cover up scarring.

“Most of my tattoos came because I’m very fair and I have a tendency to scar when I get any kind of cut,” she said. “I’ve had surgeries for different things, and if the scars didn’t heal properly, I just gotta put tattoos to take the sting out.”

Aesthetically, Parton has a preference for lighter tats. “I don’t have the real heavy, dark tattoos. Mine are all pastel. And I have more than one!”

Does Dolly Parton Have a Tattoo of Her Husband, Carl Dean?

Somebody once asked the country star if she has a tattoo of her husband, Carl Dean, somewhere on her body. “No, he’s tattooed on my heart,” Dolly Parton told People magazine. “Who knows, I may get some more later. I may just have to get covered with tattoos just so everybody could be right!”

Parton married Dean 55 years ago in 1966. The couple met in Nashville in 1964, when Parton was just 18 years old. Despite the fact that she had “two boyfriends back home,” Parton fell instantly for the businessman. People told her that getting married would ruin her career, but it never did. Her husband never tried to steal her limelight but supported her always.

To this day, the couple is still happily in love. Dolly Parton told People magazine last year that the two still go on date nights.

“We do! My husband and I, we’ve been together 56 years,” Parton said. “We still have our little times, like in the springtime when the first yellow daffodils come out. Even if there’s still some snow around it, my husband always brings me a bouquet. And he’ll usually write me a little poem. Which to me, that’s priceless. That’s like a date in itself.”
