Govs. Pete Ricketts and Kim Reynolds join seven other governors who are visiting the U.S.-Mexico border Wednesday.
The group is urging the Biden administration to curb what they call a crisis at the border.
The move comes after a formal request from Republican governors to meet with President Joe Biden over the increase in migrants crossing from Mexico into the U.S.
Border crossings are up across the board, in some areas up almost 500% from March of last year to March of this year, according to the Customs and Border Patrol.
CBP stopped almost 200,000 migrants in July, the highest in 21 years. That number has since dipped slightly.
Reynolds says those numbers are contributing to an increase in drugs in Iowa, though she has not specifically said how.
The visit also comes as both Ricketts and Reynolds sent dozens of state troopers to the border at no cost to Texas.
Documents show Iowa taxpayers are footing that $200,000 bill, though Reynolds' office does acknowledge Texas could reimburse the state.
Those ISP troopers were sent to Texas to help enforce illegal crossings and other needs with customs and border patrol.
Ricketts described the operation as a successful deployment and said the decision came after a request for help came from Texas as part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact.
"Hopefully Nebraska is never in a situation where we need to make a similar request. But if we are, we know there will be others willing and able to step up and help," Ricketts said.
