Sony Guts Payment Options on PS3 and Vita Stores

Sony endeavors to make accessing older games/consoles as difficult and painful as possible.

PlayStation Vita

Despite the PS3 and Vita online stores getting a stay of execution earlier this year, Sony is still intent on closing the door on the digital marketplaces for the two last-generation consoles.

While Sony isn’t completely pulling the plug just yet, they are making it more difficult to make purchases, as outlined by an announcement on the UK PlayStation support site. As of October 27th, players will not be able to purchase software with credit or debit cards on the PS3 or Vita. They will also not be able to add to their digital wallet.

Instead, to buy software on the PS3 or Vita, players “must first add sufficient funds to [their] wallet on PlayStation Store. You can add funds by redeeming a PlayStation Store gift card, or using a credit or debit card, PayPal, or other available payment method via a desktop computer, mobile device, PS4 console or PS5 console.”

These limitations also apply to DLC, meaning even a small transaction for a DLC could turn into a multi-platform endeavor to get the money into a player’s account.

These additional hoops seem designed to stamp out players’ ability to interact with the PS3 or Vita (which also happens to be the only way to digitally access PSP games at this time outside of emulation).
