Rami Malek Offered to Babysit Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Kids

The actor said that the Duchess was “taken aback” by his questions, but thinks his “dose of normality is probably something that is quite refreshing to them.”

If Rami Malek’s acting career ever falters, it’s good to know he can always rely on his backup plan of becoming a professional royal babysitter.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday, the actor revealed that he may have made a very odd impression on Kate Middleton when they first met at the 2019 BAFTA Awards. “I just looked at Princess Kate at one point and I said, ‘This must be exhausting,’ and she said, ‘Why?’ And I said, ‘You just had a baby, right?,’” Malek said of the encounter. The Duchess of Cambridge had just welcomed her third child, Prince Louis, in 2018. He continued, “She was taken aback, and she said, ‘How are you doing?’ And I said, ‘How are you?’ And in the most regal, elegant way she gave me a look, but you can tell. Imagine dressed to the nines, having to talk to all these actors.”

Regarding the royals, he added, “They’re so careful, but it was so cool because I think I caught her off-guard for a second and had that look of, in the most elegant, professional, royal way, ‘Yes, it’s a lot having a kid.’” But all of that strained small talk was really just build-up for Malek’s real offer for the future queen. “The funniest thing about that is, I said, ‘You know, if you ever need time off, I’m backup for you.’ She’s like, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘You guys go out, have a good time,’” he said of his babysitting offer.

The Oscar winner bumped into his favorite royal couple again last week at the world premiere of the latest installment in the James Bond franchise, No Time to Die, in which he plays the villain. Malek told Entertainment Tonight about the encounter, explaining, “For me, I just try to treat them like I would anybody else. I’m sure a dose of normality is probably something that is quite refreshing to them...just try to be normal because they live a very unusual life, I imagine.”
