SLATE: More Hall of Fame Inductions

The induction ceremony for the 2020 class to the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame was held yesterday, and both former Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder and QB Jonathan Beasley were honored. For Snyder, it’s yet another in a long list of accolades for his famed career, as Snyder was added for his three trips to the Cotton Bowl, including the big win in 2001. Beasley’s honor also came from that 2001 game, as he set a first-half record for offensive yards with 238 in route to the Wildcats 35-21 win over Tennessee. Back in Manhattan, Kellis started the week with his grades from the loss to Oklahoma, and I think Kellis’ grades were pretty in line with Jon’s recap from the weekend. Skylar was the player of the game, the offense was much improved, the defense needs lots of work, and special teams was good again. Also from the weekend in case you missed it, the K-State athletics staff threw some pretty good shade at OU’s decision to leave the conference with it’s options for the “song of the second half”.

It’s Wednesday, so that means yesterday was Klieman’s weekly press conference. We found out that Boom Massie is expected to be out 2-4 weeks, and the bye week has come at a great time to get some guys healthy. Also, there are several young guys who are making the most of the opportunities that the bye week is providing, as the K-State staff likes to use the week off to rest the starters so they give all those reps to the young guys.

We also found out earlier this week that the K-State vs Iowa State game on October 16th will be under the lights at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, with a 6:30pm CT kickoff that will be broadcast on ESPN2. The last time these two teams played on ESPN2 (in 2017), the Wildcats squeaked out a 20-19 victory over the visiting Cyclones. If you don’t remember how that one ended, a young Skylar Thompson found Isaiah Zuber in the back of the end zone to win the game with a (literal) last-second touchdown pass.

After their 2-1 overtime win over KU this past weekend, two Wildcats were honored by the league for their performances.

Caylee Thornhill, a sophomore from Lenexa, was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, becoming just the second Wildcat in school history to grab that honor. Thornhill, making her first start of the season, tallied her first career game-winning goal and the second overtime game-winning goal in program history with a left-footed strike in the 99th minute of the first overtime.

Alaina Werremeyer, a sophomore from Blue Springs, was named the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week after registering a career-high 10 saves while facing 19 total shots by the Jayhawks. Like Thornhill, Werremeyer became just the second K-State goalkeeper to earn the league’s Goalkeeper of the Week honor.

Cross Country

And we’re not done with weekly honors from the Big 12. K-State junior Hadley Splechter has been named Big 12 Runner of the Week after leading the men’s team to an eighth-place finish at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, M0 late last week. Spletcher finished 17th out of 183 runners, running a 24:28.9 in the 8K.
