(670 The Score) The Cubs have parted ways with hitting coach Anthony Iapoce and catching coach Mike Borzello, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said in a season-ending media session Wednesday.

Iapoce had been in his position for the past three years. News of his departure initially broke Tuesday before Hoyer confirmed it Wednesday.

“Both sides kind of realized it was time to make that break,” Hoyer said.

The Cubs were 11th in the National League in runs in 2021 and 10th in OPS. When the Cubs hire a new hitting coach, it will mark the seventh person in that position in an 11-year stretch.

Borzello had been with the Cubs for a decade and was far more than just a catching coach. He was an instrumental figure in the team’s game planning for opponents as well, helping the Cubs' pitching staff establish itself as one of baseball’s best as they contended from 2015 to 2020 before a downturn this past season.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for what he did here for the last 10 years,” Hoyer said.
