It's been two years since Joaquin Phoenix captivated and broke the hearts of audiences with his brilliant performance as the Clown Prince of Crime in Joker. The film ended on a major cliffhanger and it left the door wide open for a potential sequel. Last year, there have been major rumblings about Warner Bros. giving Joker 2 the green light with Phoenix and director Todd Phillips, a rumor that was confirmed last May. Now, the multi-awarded actor is finally breaking his silence about the project coming to fruition.

In an interview with The Playlist, Phoenix offered seemed to dismiss the reports and said that he doesn't know whether or not a sequel is actually happening. Playing coy about the matter, he said: "I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to - you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don't know."

It's worth noting that the DC FanDome is a few weeks away and while both Joaquin and Todd aren't advertised for the virtual spectacle, that's not to say that an announcement won't take place at the event. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how everything plays out. Should Joker 2 actually happen, it'll be interesting to see if it will still retain its overall vibe, or will it finally add some superhero elements?

2019's Joker is available for streaming on HBO Max.
