137 years of doing God's work

Annual Happiness Fair is today from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at First Congregational Church

In June 1884, the First Congregational Church of Huron was organized with leaders and church committees being appointed. Forty-three charter members were received in the fellowship of sister churches in the State of South Dakota. The cornerstone of the first church was laid April 28, 1885, on the church’s present day location at the corner of Fifth Street and California Ave.

“Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

The Women’s Missionary Society and Ladies Aid Society were merged together in 1885 and were an integral part of fund raising to support the church in its work.

The present day UCC Fellowship continues the work of their founders, which includes the annual Happiness Fair event, which is schedule for this Wednesday (today), from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Annual fall events have been held since the 1800s, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that the term “Happiness Fair” came into use.

It was in that era that you saw numerous advertising with encouraging quotes and motivational verses that spread happiness and kindness.

First Congregational wants to continue encouraging one another and the wider community in the practice of showing kindness and consideration for others. This is especially important, considering the volatile world that we are living in today.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

Over the years, there have been many different parts of Happiness Fair, including the Cookie Walk, which was created by Carleton Peters. They are not including the Cookie Walk this year because of health issues, so they are sharing some of First Congregational’s favorite recipes in order that you can make your own at home!

This year’s Happiness Fair will feature a delicious noon luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with your choice of homemade soups (potato or chicken noodle), barbecue sandwich, pickles, crackers and a large yummy homemade bar for dessert! They are offering carry out/curbside service for the meal. You can call the church at 352-5251 the morning of the event and place your order with pickup time.

They will have a Country Store filled with tempting baked goods, garden produce and homemade noodles. Please join them in the Fellowship Hall for dine in, or call us for carry out.

“So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” Colossians 1:10
