Teen Vogue cover star Olivia Rodrigo recently made a splash at the Met Gala, and while her Saint Laurent jumpsuit moment enraptured fans on Twitter, it also was a formative moment for Olivia herself.

The “good 4 u” songwriter opened up about how welcomed she felt at fashion's big night out; she shared a table with BLACKPINK member Rosé and was seen in Instagram Story pics with Rosé and her “deja vu” music video costar Talia Ryder. Previously, Olivia and Rosé had been spotted having dinner together in Los Angeles a few months back.

“[Rosé is] the best,” Olivia tells Teen Vogue. “We’d hung out before, and she’s actually the sweetest angel alive. I was so happy I was sitting next to her because I was so nervous and when I sat down it was like, ‘oh my god, I have a friend here.’ She’s absolutely the best, couldn’t sing her praises enough. She’s so talented. Nicest person in the world too.” (Collab, anyone?)

Her positive experience was only bolstered by her look for the night, the lace jumpsuit that made her one of the best dressed stars of the evening. But Olivia reveals she felt “nervous” about the outfit going in, and how she was going to be perceived. She recalls a Vogue interview where she was asked about her personal style, and how she really didn't know at the time — it was evolving, and still is. She's figuring out what she wants her aesthetic to be in front of people, especially as an 18-year-old with ever-changing tastes.

“[The Met Gala was] the first time I’ve worn something that’s a little like, body conscious, and high fashion," she says. “I remember being so nervous, going like ‘nobody’s gonna like me’ and ‘I’m gonna feel ugly.’ … After the Met, I felt so happy and confident and comfortable in my skin for the first time in a while.”

It's all the more chaotic considering she was coming to the event fresh off a performance at the VMAS the night before, one of her first times performing in front of a crowd where she could feel their energy and actually interact with fans. "I was so nervous to perform, but after that was done I was, like, riding high," she says. “They were singing the lyrics, and that was such a dream.”

When she got to the Met Gala, she was running on adrenaline. But when she left, it was with a sense of belonging and deep confidence as she went to spend time with friends she was excited to be around.

“I felt like I was exactly where I wanted to be and was supposed to be in the grand scheme of life,” Olivia tells Teen Vogue. “Not even in a career sense but just as a person who evolves and grows. I was homeschooled since I was in seventh grade, and it was so cool to be around a bunch of people, and I felt like I had a group of girlfriends that I hadn’t had in a long time."
