Sheng’s Daily: Sharks Wanted to Extend Hertl in Summer, Kane Using Fake Vax Card?
The San Jose Sharks‘ two biggest off-season storylines grabbed headlines today.
In one corner, Pierre LeBrun of TSN said of impending UFA Tomas Hertl: “The Sharks would’ve loved to have extended him this past summer. But my sense is Hertl wasn’t ready to enter that type of conversation.
“If the Sharks are out of a playoff spot come March 21st, Trade Deadline, and if Hertl doesn’t have a change of heart, I think that’s a guy who could be in play.”
There have been differing stories on how much the San Jose Sharks have talked to Hertl’s camp about an extension — San Jose Hockey Now published a story in August suggesting not very much and Hertl essentially corroborated that in an interview with Czech press weeks later. On the outset of training camp, however, Doug Wilson countered, “I’ve had several conversations with his agent…Tomas knows how we feel about him.”
But that might be semantics: The consistent thing in everything we’ve heard is that Hertl wants to win. And you do get the sense that while he’d love to win in San Jose, he’d be willing to do it elsewhere too.
One underrated point: A lot has been made about Hertl in relation to where the San Jose Sharks are in the standings come the Trade Deadline. And obviously, that’s important: If you aren’t in the playoffs then, how can you convince Hertl that San Jose is a place where he can win?
But just as important, I think, is Wilson convincing Hertl of his long-term blueprint for success.
A flukish playoff run this year may not be enough to convince the popular pivot to stay.
And at the other corner, there’s another ugly Evander Kane story.
Kane is already under NHL investigation for sexual assault, domestic battery, and undisclosed COVID protocol violations.
A.J. Perez of Front Office Sports says the league’s investigation into Kane’s possible COVID violations is centered around the San Jose Sharks star allegedly using a fake vaccination card. Perez suggested that the San Jose Sharks could also be facing sanctions for Kane’s alleged indiscretion.
Another day, another ugly Kane story. We’ll see how this one shakes out.
